August 3, 2011
MMA Weekly reports that former UFC middleweight Ivan Salaverry has produced a dedicated phone app showing MMA instruction. The app is available on Itunes and is free to download with additional content going for an introductory price point of $2.99.The app includes Salaverry instruction on the basics of MMA fighting to his signature move, “The Salaverry.” The instruction was shot in HD and three cameras were used to capture all angles of the instruction.
Salaverry spoke to MMA Weekly about the app:
“For me it was really nice to see people to have the ability to download any kind of MMA technique and the possibilities of that. You don’t need to go to your computer; you can just get your smartphone and download it right then and there.”
“You get to see me show techniques like the crucifix that you might not normally get from other people. You also get a lot of different angles with the camera; top side, bottom side, and the detail work of a lot of other stuff we put in there.”
Payout Perspective:
This is a unique approach to the “how to” market in MMA. We’ve seen RUSHFIT workout videos from GSP, the Gracie Academy training programs and even the UFC training partner offered on the PS3, XBox and Wii. It goes to show you that there are multiple platforms for instructional videos and the marketplace is growing. The phone app is a unique idea and from the initial video screen grabs, it looks detailed and comprehensive. More importantly, produced in HD, the picture quality appears good which is necessary if you only have a small screen to look at the video. For a free download and a relatively inexpensive price for additional content, it could catch on.
Yankee uses MMA to get into shape for spring training
February 24, 2011
WSJ reports that new Yankee Catcher Russell Martin utilized mixed martial arts training to get into shape for spring training. Martin, a native of Montreal, used GSP’s gym to help him get into shape for baseball.Via WSJ:
…Martin went over to the gym where Mr. St. Pierre trains, and sought out his world-renowned trainer, Jon Chaimberg.
Mr. Martin did not do any actual fighting or sparring. but he did watch the MMA fighters train, saw several fights and hung out with Mr. St. Pierre.Payout Perspective:
Similar to the NBA’s Roy Hibbert, here is another example of a professional athlete using MMA to get ready for their sport. The article ties in GSP since Martin, who is from Montreal, sought out MMA training in his hometown–and found where GSP trains.
The MMA fitness industry is growing along with the sport. Not only are we seeing the UFC get into the gym business, but there are fitness videos and a fitness magazine with a focus on an MMA workout.

New Magazine Focuses on MMA Fitness
February 9, 2011
Fighters Only magazine has introduced a new fitness publication called, Train Hard Fight Easy (THFE), which will focus on MMA fitness and nutrition.According to Fighters Only:
In addition to expert editorial discussing MMA-related health, nutrition and conditioning THFE also features blow-by-blow fighting techniques. Taking readers through their fight secrets and appearing in their own picture editorials every issue are the THFEfight camp: MMA legend Wanderlei Silva and his long-term coach Rafael Cordeiro; BJJ guru Renzo Gracie; Greg Jackson, the most successful trainer in MMA today; plus esteemed wrestling coach Kenny Johnson and his close friend UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes. The first issue details the training habits of Georges St. Pierre. The magazine is also available via Fighters Only’s iPad app on iTunes.
Payout Perspective:
Considering the amount of MMA gyms, “cardio kickboxing” classes and workout videos (e.g., RUSHFIT) populating the workout landscape now, it is easy to see a fitness periodical dedicated to MMA. With GSP as its cover guy for the first issue, you can expect booming sales.
Regardless of the cover, the popularity of MMA has many people trying it out themselves. From a workout perspective, many people are into the “Men’s Health-type” information on what to eat to have a body like GSP and less like Fedor. A magazine focusing on how MMA athletes eat and train should have the eye of many wannabe fighters and people just interested in getting in shape.
